How to wean a 23-month old baby from pacifiers?

I am a little bit worried. EJ is still using his pacifier until now. He doesn't use it all the time but when he naps or sleeps at night, he has to have it. Even when he is in deep sleep, he will still look for the pacifier if it falls off his mouth. And if he can't find it, he will cry.

Actually, I haven't really done anything to stop him from using it. Which makes me guilty because it makes me look like a very passive mom (just like the potty training, which makes for another post).

Next month, he's turning two and I don't want him to be using his pacifier (or dummy) any longer. But how do I explain this to a 2-year old toddler? I can foresee major crying session every nap time or sleeping time. Sigh.

I know I have to be firm if I want him to stop. Maybe other moms out there have tricks to help me out? As much as possible I don't want to make it hard for him or for me..hehehe(or is that possible?).

Sigh.

UPDATE: EJ is completely off the pacifier now. Please read the links below how he made it.

Progress made and Completely pacifier-free now!

I totally understand ur concern...my son is 4 yrs old and he still uses pacifier:)

We are taking baby steps n some bribery works. Now he only uses it at night.

I asked the doctor, and he said it is okay as he still has his baby teeth. It will not ruin his gum or teeth of make it crooked.

Just as long as he doesn't use it pass the age of 7 :)

Hi madre, thanks for dropping by :)

Really at four? Wow! I told my baby last night not to use the pacifier anymore because he's a "big boy" already. He seemed to understand and said "okay". But when he was about to sleep he made a fuss and wanted to have the pacifier. Hahaha..

I'll try bribery tonight and see if it works :)

I'm not sure if i could be of any help, because Sean dislikes pacifiers even at a few days old. Pati teether, ayaw din nya.

But you can try throwing away his pacifier "accidentally" in the bin, while he's watching, and say, "That's dirty, and you can no longer use it."

It's harsh, but it's what my mother goose did when I never said goodbye to my bottle at 3.5 yo! She threw it in the ocean, while we were in the boat. Although I'm not sure if throwing works for EJ, who by the way will be 2 very soon. Yay! Happy birthday!!!!

And oh, never say goodbye when you're letting go of the pacifier. He might think it's part of him.

We'll share potty stories, ha. Hehehe! I'll be posting another potty story soon. Naka-save lang kasi ung post ngayon dahil di pa tapos. Imagine, first paragraph pa lang natapos ko. Hahaha!
